It is every parent’s worst nightmare - to get a call in the middle of the night saying your child has died. It could not have happened at a worse time for a Lusikisiki family that was busy planning a party for the daughter of the deceased.
Lulu Mafuduka tells Drum of the fateful night she got the call that changed their lives. Her niece, who she had raised, had died aboard an MSC cruise ship she was working on.
Hombisa Nana Mafuduka (31) had left home in January heading to Durban where she was going to be a crew member of MSC Orchestra. She was due to return home in May. And even though it had been months since she had seen her loved ones, she was still in contact with them. The night she died, she had spoken to her aunt about money she was going to send for her daughter’s 6th birthday party two days later.
