It’s that time of the year when many of us are looking forward to the holidays – sun, sea and plenty of parties.

And after months of being in lockdown, South Africans are ready to take some short lefts and relax. 

But for some married African women, that kind of down time is just a dream. When they head home to check on family members post Covid, all they must look forward to are long days of hard work. Rising before the crack of dawn if she is in a rural area, the makoti will light a fire, get breakfast ready, wash dishes, do the laundry and see to the children before preparing lunch and supper.
