Having been at the forefront of the fight against the abuse of women in South Africa for decades, People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) knows a thing or two about the victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
And the organisation has a bone to pick with government. Its CEO, Mary Makgaba tells Drum that our leaders have got it wrong and there's a twisted kind of logic to giving prison inmates more benefits than victims of abuse.
Mary says many of the women who come through their doors suffer because they are dependent on the men that abuse them.
