She's one of the lucky ones. She found something she loved and was passionate about and made it into a career.

Amanda Mbongwa, also known as Fitfanatic, enjoys going to work.

She owns FitFanatic Active, which is an activewear and active lifestyle brand. She's also the head of Ulwandla Developments and Loskop Gijima an initiative that grooms young athletes to unearth their talents, which started as a running club and subsequently grew into a cycling club for young people who were willing and able but could not afford the sport.

She also does a series of hiking expeditions in the Drakensberg to keep her community of Fanatics motivated and inspired to stay active, healthy.

The beginning of the journey

Amanda was born and raised in a small village of Loskop on the foothill of the Central Drakensberg, she completed both her primary and high schooling in the town of Estcourt.

Amanda isn't an overnight success. It took a lot of work for her Fitfanatic to work. After completion of her BCom Degree she worked as an HR Manager for 10yrs in the Mining Industry and later the telecommunications space.

“The transition as with any change was never smooth nor easy, but my spirit of discipline, commitment and obedience assists me greatly in all my ventures also having a clear vision and strong belief in my vision guides me through the ups and downs,” she says, talking about the transition from corporate to entrepreneurship.

She always knew her goal and desire was to be self-employed and follow her passion.

“I think I did know I'd work for myself early on purely because I grew up in a family of hard-working entrepreneurs and hustlers. It's all I was exposed to and it shaped my aspirations," She told Drum.

Driven by passion

Her fitness journey started back in high school when she was in need to find something to help take her mind off things. Running became a solution. Years later, her fitness journey gave the birth to FitFanatic.

“It was a no brainer with FitFanatic Active because the brand is founded on my lifestyle which I live passionately with the logistics business it was a matter of great opportunity availing itself and being the optimistic hard worker that I am I committed to making it work," she adds.

The businesswoman is passionate about helping others lead healthy and active lifestyles and encourages this through grooming youth athletes and giving them an opportunity to uncover their deepest potential.

"When I got into fitness back in 2016 it seemed like an industry that had a lot of potential, people were doing a lot of things, there was supplements, there were personal trainers and I saw a big gap in the active wear space. That's when I saw this is something that I could make an income out of."

She believes in the old saying that "if you do something that you love it won’t be like you working, if you do something that you love you will succeed".

Because fitness and a healthy lifestyle have always been her love and passion she figured if she does that she won’t be working again in her life. And that’s exactly what happened.

Goals and aspirations

Just as any entrepreneur, Amanda wants to see her businesses thrive and break barriers.

“As with any person in business we want growth for our business in leaps and bounds. We want access to the global markets, to also be known as a brand that has a positive impact on a very large scale," she says.
