Over the years, DRUM has been lucky enough to witness many extravagant nuptials and lavish receptions. But this must be the wedding to beat all others.
The spectacular three-day union of Limpopo property tycoon David Mabilu (42) and his wife Phala (38) left guests and media gasping at the sheer luxury of the whole production.
Held on the beautiful island of Mauritius, guests were flown out on a specially chartered plane from South Africa and they described this no-expenses-spared event as “unbelievable”, “heavenly” and “out of this world”.
Airline tickets alone set the couple back R2.5 million and total wedding costs are rumoured to have run to R20 million.
“This is my dream wedding and it’s been worth waiting for,” a beaming Phala told us afterwards. “It’s great that we could share this day with those who are close to us. Some of our friends have never been on a plane or an island, so having those nearest and dearest to us here has meant a lot.”
It’s no wonder that all invited guests accepted the invitation to this event organised by Generations’ star and celebrity wedding planner Sophie Ndaba. Among the many luminaries were stars Sonia Sedibe and Lerato Moloi, soccer boss Bobby Motaung and ANC Youth League president Julius Malema, who was still limping after his recent youth march.
