Brand new TV show to highlight black excellence in farming

Angie Khumalo, Metro FM broadcaster and passionate farmer, will be presenting African Farming, a brand-new TV show which will both highlight successful black farmers and educate new entrants to agriculture on the ins and outs of farming in South Africa. Khumalo will be presenting the show mainly in Zulu and Sotho, with English subtitles.

The show will be accompanied by a website (www.africanfarming.com), monthly magazine edited by seasoned agricultural journalist Peter Mashala, as well as social media channels where followers will find additional information on farming best practices and the success stories featured on each episode. The magazine will be distributed with Landbouweekblad or it can be downloaded for free from the website.

Mashala says the aim of the programme is in part to present a new and fresh image of the African farmer.

“The African Farming brand seeks to inspire up-and-coming farmers by showcasing some of the best farming talent we have in South Africa, providing them with examples they can identify with and look up to. We want to be an informative and inspiring brand that contributes to agricultural development,” Mashala says.

African Farming will be produced by Brand Republic, while the magazine and website will be published by Landbouweekblad (Media24).

Bathabile Modutoane, who is co-producing the show with Enathi Mqokeli, says they hope to bridge the gap between regular South Africans and the agricultural market.

“We will present the show in a language the regular person will understand and appreciate. African Farming will not only be for people already involved in agriculture, but for everyone interested by agriculture and looking for a way in – including the guy who has to catch two taxis on his way to work and who buys a vetkoek on the corner. We also want to highlight the value of farmers in South Africa. Farmers are resilient and innovative, and they play a massive role in the economy.”

Mqokeli echoes these sentiments. “We want to inspire all emerging black farmers so that they know it’s possible to expand their operations and hopefully get new farmers to join the agricultural sector by using success stories as seen on the show.”

African Farming is created by Landbouweekblad, Brand Republic South Africa and executive producer, Media24 TV. The show is produced with the support of sponsors John Deere, Elanco, AFGRI, Corteva Agriscience, Pannar Seed and Pioneer Seed South Africa.

The show will be broadcast on Mzansi Wethu (DStv channel 163) on Thursdays, starting October 1st, at 18:30, with a repeat on Sundays at 11:00.
