I tried DRUM’s 4-week detox program and this is how it made me feel!

Are you ready to detox with DRUM?

Megan Luiters decided to try Detox with DRUM, our 4-week online nutritious eating plan because she was tired of feeling tired and wanted to eat better, sleep better and have healthier looking skin.

She’s just completed day 5 of 28 and tells us all about it.

What was a typical day’s eating like before you decided to do the Detox with DRUM plan?

Breakfast was always very plain and simple: either Corn Flakes, Weet-Bix, Maize Meal or muesli and yoghurt. On weekends eggs, toast and bacon but mostly a slice of honey loaf bread with a thick layer of peanut butter or cheese.

Lunch was mostly food from the previous night’s dinner, mostly rice or pasta and vegetables with meat (mostly chicken or fish).

If there weren’t any leftovers my preferred lunch would be anything with bread or crackers like a chicken mayo sandwich or tuna and feta with crackers.

Dinner was meat, chicken or fish with rice and veggies, pasta dishes, curries, seafood dishes and take outs over weekends. I also love stews, especially during winter!

“I’m spending less money on meat and am already feeling the financial and health benefits of that.”

Drinks: I try to drink as much water during the day as possible but since winter has started it’s been a struggle. I love tea and since the lockdown I’ve been having a glass of wine with my dinner about three to four times a week.

Snacks: Sweets and chocolates on weekends but also in the week if I craved them.

Since the first month of lockdown I didn’t follow this as strictly and indulged in chocolate and candy more during the week but I’m over that and back to practicing more self-control when it comes to my eating habits.

What were your biggest food “crimes”?

Indulging in chocolate and candy and coffee and alcohol more frequently.

What was in your pantry and fridge before that you considered unhealthy?

  • I never knew how much sugar some sauces are laced with. Mayo is my favourite sauce to use so that always used to be in the pantry.
  • Lots of bread – savoury breads, ciabatta, garlic rolls. I’m very much into bread and pasta!
  • Bacon because its quick and easy to make and use in foods.
  • Chips and chocolates were always there and so was ice cream.

How did you find shopping for the Detox with DRUM programme?

It was informative and different. The week-by-week shopping lists that go with the supplied recipes as well as the pantry staples list are very handy.

I was worried that the shopping would go over my monthly budget for groceries but many of the pantry staples will last for more than a month. I plan to make these recipes again and will already have those ingredients so it works out to being more affordable for me.

I am also spending less money or meat and am already feeling the financial and health benefits of that.

The recipes got me very excited for the new flavours and dishes I would try.  The four beans and couscous recipe really surprised me – I wasn’t looking forward to it but my mind changed as soon as I had it. It’s delicious and filling even though it’s meatless. I’ll definitely be making that one again and again!

I have been wanting to cut down on meat for a while now and this program allows me to make the change in a manner that excites me which is a bonus and it is something I am looking forward to in the next few weeks. The meals are surprisingly filling and extremely delicious.
