Johannesburg - A total of 80 000 South Africans overseas have informed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) that they want to vote in the election.

Advocate Pansy Tlakula, the chief electoral officer, said on Tuesday that no less than 4 000 were planning to vote in London.

The other countries where significant numbers of people were eager to vote, were Australia and New Zealand.

Tlakula said she would be in London herself on April 15 to ensure that everything went according to plan.

"We can't expect that officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs alone are responsible for the electoral process. They are not used to the pressure that goes with it, but we are," she said.

Overseas voters who have registered, have until Friday to inform the IEC about their intention to vote on April 15.
