I sat on our back steps, just below the kitchen door. My mom walked past with a mug of coffee for our gardener, July, and I watched her in the sunlight, striding across the lawn.

As she returned to the kitchen, grabbing her ID and handbag, I asked her if Nelson Mandela was president yet. "No Meggy," she replied. "But he will be."

I was five years old. She got in her car, and drove to the voting station.

This a very historic day for our country and is celebrated with joy.

For it is a sad day my mother was buried on that holiday and her birth date was 24 September Heritage day.

I remember waiting for Madiba's release and wondered what he looked like in his old age and if he may be strong enough 2 lead the country. My wish came true he freed us on the 27th. It was also my first time voting after being in Zambia/Zimbabwe half my life. It is also my birthday on 27 April so I have good reason 2 celebrate. I wish south Africa a blessed freedom day as we recall the past & present  & also empower our youth/young people to take South Africa forward & cherish Madiba's legacy.

Being part of history was such an experience, changing the future of the country was my joy, but that's all. Wish I can get a slice of what I voted for but hey, my president built a R246m house, Malema is canvassing on Jimmy Choo shoes and the rest is history, not forgetting the riots all over the country.
