Red overalls thrown out of Eastern Cape council meetings

Eastern Cape - The Economic Freedom Fighters in the Eastern Cape claims it has been victimised in most municipalities in the province by the African National Congress, its MPL Siyabulela Peter told News24.

"So many of our councillors have been kicked out of first council sittings because we are told we can't be dressed in red overalls, gumboots and domestic worker uniforms and yet there are no rules of this nature anywhere," Peter said.

He said the ANC was retaliating against the EFF in the province because it refused a coalition.

He said EFF councillors were kicked out of council sittings in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Engcobo Local Municipality, OR Tambo municipality, King Sabata Dalindyebo and Ingquza Hill Local Municipality.

"These are ANC-led municipalities. It's becoming a culture here that we are victimised by the ANC because we refused a coalition. It's something that has been recurring, whenever we go to legislature we are kicked out. They are angry with us and this is a low level of doing things. In the same breath they are failing to delivery services to the people. They are missing the point," he said.

Peter said the party was planning to challenge the municipalities and was taking legal advice on the matter.

In 2015 Parliament was reported to be working toward toughening several regulations for the National Assembly, including a dress code for MPs.

EFF leader Julius Malema openly rejected the proposed changes, which would most likely require the EFF to swap their workers' gear for a more formal look.

ANC Eastern Cape spokesperson Oscar Mabuyane could not be reached for comment.
