SA's new political game still to unfold - analysts

Johannesburg - The last of the country's major metros elected their respective mayors and speakers on Tuesday, heralding a new era of local politics in South Africa.

Political analysts Lawson Naidoo and Ralph Mathekga say South Africa's local government landscape will be unpredictable, at least for the next few months.

Mathekga could not see a commitment from any party about how metros would be run.

“With the EFF, they don't have a grand coalition, and they could possibly continue disrupting when things happen that they don't agree with.

“The bigger game plan is yet to unfold. We will have to see if the DA will yield to some things by the EFF.

“With the ANC, being in opposition, I don't think they are ready for that. They have been traumatised,” he said.

Budgets and promises

Naidoo said parties would have to find ways to meet their promises to voters using budgets that had already been approved.

“They already have something to work with, and they need to prioritise to meet their promises.”

Things could get interesting with the next budgets.

“That is going to be where the intense negotiations will take place. They will have to find compromises and find each other,” Naidoo said.

The ANC lost control of three major metros: Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Nelson Mandela Bay. Secretary general Gwede Mantashe said on Tuesday that the party wanted to go to the people and “own-up where we have erred”.

“The ANC, if it is effective in opposition benches, can actually turn the balance of forces in its favour. Work hard, accept that you are in opposition,” he said.

The opposition constantly needed to interrogate matters. If it did that it could prove that it had governed Tshwane and Johannesburg well.

Here is the list of the new mayors and speakers in the country's eight metros:
