Just as the South African Rand is a barometer of the country, so ‘free-and-fair’ elections are the same for politicians. With local municipalities going to the polls, so the political parties will get an idea of how well, or not so well, they’ve performed over the previous campaign.

And given the importance of ‘running the cities’ political analyst Paul Whelan says the usually extreme EFF leader Julius Malema has been ‘oddly’ quiet on this front. In this piece, Whelan looks at the similarities between Malema and US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

And while they’re both extreme – Whelan sees Trump as a useful fool in America whereas in South Africa’s young and fragile Democracy, Malema’s anything but. – Stuart Lowman
