He’s the headmaster of South Africa’s glass-half-full school, who’s recently turned critical, which is never a good sign. Seething after Fikile Mbablula banned the country from hosting any of the Big Four international sporting events due to lack of transformation. Steuart Pennington, who owns the website www.sagoodnews.co.za, is fuming again.

Pennington has joined the vent of editors following SABC’s censorship of the popular Sunday morning news show, The Editors, hosted on SAFM. It’s all part of Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s ploy to rid the airwaves of anything critical of the ruling party, or upsets the perfect picture. It follows the banning of protest coverage on air, no more listener call-ins, and until recently the opposition Democratic Alliance’s election advert.

Pennington wonders why government is blaming everyone else for their misgivings, rather than looking at themselves for solutions. The truth always has a way of finding the light. And while Pennington dusts off George Orwell’s Animal Farm, given South Africa’s slow slide down the global Press Freedom ranks, should we be concerned? – Stuart Lowman
