SA Champion Capitec looks abroad – for digital banking breakthroughs (and a deal perhaps?)

Since visiting the Capitec team in the bank’s modest Stellenbosch home three years ago, I’ve watched their continued progress with great interest. So it was good to spend a couple hours with CEO Gerrie Fourie, in London for speed dating-type updates to foreign shareholders which own 18% of his company’s equity.

Gerrie had just arrived from California where he was checking out an tech incubator that supports hundreds of financial sector startups. Among other things – including squashing suggestions the execs are selling shares – he shared some thoughts on how Silicon Valley may well hold the key to his group’s international expansion ambitions. – Alec Hogg
