Huawei P20 to take on iPhone X design

Barcelona - If online speculation and leaks are to be believed, Huawei’s next flagship device may feature a similar display to the iPhone X and three rear cameras.

On Sunday, the Chinese company announced that its flagship device for 2018, the P20 would be unveiled in Paris, France on March 27.

Ahead of the launch events leaks of the smartphone have surfaced online, with the device adopting a design approach similar to the iPhone X with regard to contours of its display.

According to the leaked images, the P20 features an iPhone X-like screen with a small indent of the face housing a speaker and camera, complementing an otherwise almost bezel-less display.

According to mobile phone specification website, GSM ArenaHuawei’s P20 and P20 Plus smartphones may feature a dual camera on its rear and an 8 megapixel facing camera.

However, speculation has also been added by tech website, The Verge, which reported that the P20 may even feature up to three cameras on the rear.

The rumour might not be too far-fetched as in a teaser tweet for the smartphone’s launch, a graphic accompanying it read “SEE MOOORE WITH AI” with each ‘O’ implying a lens, while also touting the company’s Artificial Intelligence technology recently included in its Mate 10 Pro.

Launched in South Africa in November last year, the Mate 10 Pro included the Kirin 970 chipsets, billed as the world’s first true AI processor for smartphones.

According to Akhram Mohamed, Huawei product marketing director, the AI built into the device will allow it to perform functions that may only be released in the next few months.

“We are a hardware company not a software company, but we are confident that in a few months' time when new software is launched, the device will be able to read what food is on your plate and how many calories you are consuming,” Mohamed previously told Fin24.

Kyle Venktess is attending Mobile World Congress from February 28 to March 1, on invitation from Huawei Technologies South Africa.
