Parliament uneasy about SAA

Cape Town - The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises said on Wednesday it was concerned about the latest developments at South African Airways (SAA).

The airline’s board on Monday suspended SAA's acting CEO Vuyisile Kona.

Peter Maluleka, chairperson of the committee said SAA had, over the past few months, experienced multiple resignations from the Board and top executives.

“Last year in November, the committee undertook an oversight visit to SAA. When the committee interacted with the national carrier, members of the committee were not satisfied with the outcome of the discussions.

"The presentations made by the SAA Board and its management were unsatisfactory.

"The committee recommended and appealed to SAA to expand on its strategy and give regular progress report on implementation. Actually the committee is not surprised at all with the latest developments at SAA,” Maluleka said.

Maluleka said governance problems in SAA have affected the execution of a turnaround strategy.

This included a decision to initially appoint Kona as both acting CEO and acting chairperson.

“But we have full confidence in the Board and the Minister of Public Enterprises that they will bring about stability in the entity,” Maluleka said.

SAA will brief the committee next week.
