Cape Town - The Century City Conference Centre (CCCC) and Hotel in Cape Town celebrated its official opening this past weekend.
Designed with both hospitality and operations in mind, the adjacent hotel offers 125 rooms and increases the number of rooms in the area to 600 in total - all within walking distance from the conference centre. The mixed-use development involves a private equity investment of R1bn.
Cape Town Tourism is on a massive drive to market the Western Cape as a global destination for business travel and as a result there has been a great demand for a conference facility with a capacity to host up to 1 200 delegates in one venue - 1 900 people in total - across 19 venues.
Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde said at the occasion that this project will make a major contribution to drawing in and accommodating new business and commended the Rabie Project Group for this R1bn investment in the Western Cape.
Through this new initiative about 300 jobs are being created.
"One of its most significant impacts is on the lives of the people who will be employed here, and those who will gain indirect business from it," said Winde.
"This project is sure to deliver an increase in the number of conference delegates to our region and I wish its team very well in building up a successful business."
He added that the province has already secured conference bids worth almost R2bn in the current financial year.
Just two of these conferences - the World Ophthalmology Congress 2020 and the International Fiscal Association 2022 - will bring 16 300 delegates to the Western Cape and generate a total estimate of R262m for the economy.
"These trends speak to business confidence in our region. It is excellent news for our tourism sector, which has been identified as a key growth area," he said. One of the strategic goals is to create an enabling environment which grows business tourism in the region, a sector which currently employs 204 000 people.
Joint CEOs Glyn Taylor and Gary Koetser believe that the CCCC is a great new asset to the hospitality industry and a perfect opportunity to increase the number of business travellers to South Africa and Cape Town.
