The embattled South African Post Office (SAPO) has lofty goals for its turnaround strategy – delivering medicines, monopolising sub-sectors in postage and deliveries, and e-commerce.
But it has faced ongoing backlash over service delivery, steadily declining revenue, the impact of crime on operations, and a lack of capacity following retrenchments.
It has also faced a number of legal battles, including its own bid to stop rival couriers from delivering packages smaller than 1kg, and opposition party the DA's threat to challenge a decision to stop paying R350 social relief of distress grants at the post office in an attempt to relieve queues.
