Ramaphosa fires Moyane as SARS boss

President Cyril Ramaphosa has axed suspended SA Revenue Service (SARS) commissioner Tom Moyane following an inquiry, the presidency has confirmed.

When contacted for comment, Moyane directed questions to his lawyer Eric Mabuza.

Earlier this week, Moyane's legal team submitted a document to the Presidency, imposing a new deadline to the president of November 9, 2018, calling on the president to indicate if he would implement the recommendations of the Nugent Commission to have him removed from his position.

In the document, Moyane calls the Nugent Inquiry's recommendations "a thinly veiled-attempt to campaign for the permanent appointment of Mr Mark Kingon, who is the acting commissioner of SARS".

Moyane was supposed to submit reasons to the president as to why he should not be removed from his position last week

Moyane filed a Constitutional Court application to stay a disciplinary hearing as well as the Nugent inquiry. Moyane won the bid to halt the disciplinary proceedings. He believes it is beyond the mandate of the commission to recommend that he be removed.

Presidency spokesperson Khusela Diko said a statement on the matter would be issued.
