Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula has told Members of Parliament that the total amount budgeted for his private office in the 2019-20 financial year comes to R22.7m.

Mbalula was giving a written response to a question submitted by Democratic Alliance MP Luyolo Mphithi, who had asked for details of the private office’s budget, the remuneration of each employee, as well as their job descriptions and qualifications.

"The total amount budgeted for the private office of the Minister for the 2019-20 financial year is R22.7m," said Mbalula in his reply. He added that in the same period, about 13 staff members in his private office were budgeted to receive a total remuneration of R9.3m. Details of individual packages were not given.

These staff members include a chief of staff, a receptionist in Pretoria and in Cape Town, as well as a food services aid, a private secretary and an assistant administrative secretary. Of the 13 staff members, six have qualifications beyond matric.

The DA also sent similar questions to other ministers in Cabinet with private offices. In his reply, Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu said his private office had a budget of R30.5m for the 2019/20 financial year.
