R38bn for Free State education

Bloemfontein - The Free State education department continues to receive the largest share of the provincial budget, Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman said on Tuesday.

It was allocated R38.7 billion over the 2016 medium term expenditure framework, Rockman said during her budget speech in the provincial legislature.

The department would use R12bn in the 2016/17 financial year, about R13bn in 2017/18, and R13.7bn in 2018/19. It would go towards funding no-fee schools and improve education infrastructure.

She praised the province for its 81.6% pass rate in the 2015 matric exams.

"We congratulate MEC Tate Makgoe and his team for ensuring that the stability and consistency and our education sector gives effect to the Namibian proverb that 'learning expands great souls'," she said.
