Dow drifts near 20 000 ahead of consumer data

New York - The Dow rose closer to 20 000 points early Tuesday in a subdued post-holiday session ahead of key consumer confidence data.

About 15 minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 19 977.58, up 0.2%.

The broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.4% to 2 273.21, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.8% to 5 503.50.
