Cape Town – A Fin24 user who was under debt review managed to pay up all her debts, but she’s struggling to get a debt clearance certificate on her Edgar's credit card from Standard Bank.
"My husband and I went under debt review from 12 July 2010. On 31 July 2013 my husband passed away and all the debt was paid up except a credit card from Edgar’s, which was underwritten by Standard Bank."
She claimed that Standard Bank neglected to put a claim on the estate for the debt to be paid up and they’re not responding to her queries.
"I have approached their ombudsman, but I also got a run around. This is getting old now as I am debt free, but I can’t get my clearance certificate."
She said her only other option would be to go to court, but that it would cost her a lot of money. "I would really appreciate some advice."
Fin24 asked Standard Bank for comment:
Spokesperson Ross Linstrom said then incident was investigated.
"In this instance our service levels did not meet our client’s expectations," he said. "We can only apologise for the inconvenience and frustration that this matter has caused the client."
Linstrom said the bank has been in contact with the client to inform her that the balance on the account has been written off due to the error on Standard Bank's part.
"The account closure certificate reflecting a zero balance with be sent to client."
