Home care and medical rebates

Cape Town - To help make the filing process as seamless as possible Fin24 has joined forces with the SA Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT), to answer users' tax questions as far as possible.

User question:

Can I include cost of home care for my 93 year old wife in my medical rebate calculation?

Piet Nel, SA Institute of Tax Professionals responds:

You can under the following circumstances:

A ‘dependant’ (for purposes of the as the additional medical expenses tax credit) includes “any other member of a person’s family in respect of whom he or she is liable for family care and support”.  We accept that you are liable for the support of your mother.

The term ‘qualifying medical expenses’ requires that the expenses were paid by the person (yourself) during the year of assessment to any duly registered medical practitioner.

With regard a duly registered nursing home or hospital or any duly registered or enrolled nurse, midwife or nursing assistant (or to any nursing agency in respect of the services of such a nurse, midwife or nursing assistant) in respect of the illness or confinement of the person or any dependant of the person.  Based on the information provided we don’t know if this requirement is met.
