Debt review relief

SA consumers are drowning in debt.
SA consumers are drowning in debt.
A Fin24 user who shared her debt review horror with the Fin24 community is greatly appreciative of the role the Debt Counsellors Association and Fin24 played in helping her to not overpay her creditors. She writes:

The Debt Counsellors Association has been very helpful and they assisted me by doing the reconciliations and dealing directly with the creditors.

The debt counsellor has been very quiet so I am unsure as to their part in this whole disagreement.

A reconciliation was done and found that most of the creditors have indeed been paid in full, or I owed a lot less than confirmed by them.

I must add that if I hadn't taken matters further and if Fin24 did not publish my story, the creditors would have received more than initially ordered by the court.

The creditors stated that due to the fact that payment was stopped by the National Payment Distribution Agency (NPDA), my debt review status has been terminated and they refused to liaise with the counsellor.

I am waiting for a reply from one creditor only and have been doing so since the beginning of December. All the creditors, except this one, have issued “paid up” letters.

It has taken them from July 2012 to date, which is almost seven months, to resolve. The debt counsellor unfortunately had no part in assisting me and I am very grateful to the DCASA. I would have been in a much worse position than I was if it hadn’t been for the association.

I certainly wish there were more people out there willing to assist, as the fight or struggle with the creditors if you don’t know the law is incredibly unfair and unjust.

I find it so sad and feel that there must be so many consumers out there that are suffering the same as me. Due to the fact that you are under debt review and you know that you owe so much money, one feels unable to stand up for your rights and only willing to please the creditors.

They blatantly exploit consumers and create so much more stress and taking whatever they can out of you.

Consumers don't know their rights and don't always understand the law. You are so blinded by your debt and you are completely in the hands of the debt counsellor and rely and trust in them to assist you, that you just “plod” along.

I just want this matter to be finalised and the clearance certificate to be issued so that I can have my credit record cleared and we carry on with our lives without this dark cloud over us.

Thank you
