Cape Town – MTN and Telkom have emerged as popular networks for South Africans looking to save cash on phone contracts, according to local comparison website Phonefinder.
The most popular deal on the cellphone contract comparison website is an iPhone 4S on an MTN TopUp R110 package.
The website said that 19% of users chose the iPhone deal.
“This phone may be old but compared to many recent low end feature phones it is still considered a powerhouse. The main reason why this phone is winning on Phonefinder must be the affordability. Coming in at only R129 per month means that many South Africans entering the smartphone world can finally get a much desired brand like Apple,” Phonefinder told Fin24.
In terms of contracts, the winner was Telkom’s SmartPlan 50 which attracted 18% of subscribers. That plan allows 500MB of mobile data per month.
According to Phonefinder honourable mentions should go to AG Mobile (AG Mobile Go Tab) and Huawei (Ascend P8 Lite) for devices aimed at low cost consumers as well as Cell C and MTN for data packages.
“This power packed affordable phone has been on the Phonefinder Top 6 chart for a long time now but this month the package which is stealing the show is Cell C’s R199 per month Epic100 Deal,” Phonefinder said of the Huawei device.
The platform which is free to use hosts 5 000 daily visitors and compares 8 000 cellphone contracts from South African mobile operators.
“Consumers love choice, and they love deals - but they are also too busy to shop around and find the best deal out of all the choice. That is the reason why we built Phonefinder. To help people filter through the choice and find the best deal fast,” Lance Krom, Phonefinder managing director and founder told Fin24.
