Cape Town - First National Bank experienced minor website problems on Tuesday as a part of its internet banking portal went down.

Users logging in to make payments were confronted with error codes, but checking accounts and balances seemed unaffected.

"Online banking experienced high volumes during 07:10 to 07:20 this morning affecting some cross browser payments," Sahil Mungar, FNB Digital Banking spokesperson, told Fin24.

FNB took remedial action to fix the problem Mungar added.

"These cross browser payments were restored at 07:20 and all systems continue to function normally. App and cellphone banking were not affected during this time. Customers can also use the app for banking while away from work or home."

ATMs remained functional and there were no reports that customers in branches were affected by the outage.

For mobile users, the FNB app remains functional and the problem was limited to the website.

Series of SA banking glitches

Several technical outages have affected South African banks in 2014.

Earlier this month, Absa's internet banking services suffered a technical glitch. In September, Standard Bank experienced a technical outage that affected its ATM services, internet banking and debit and credit card function across South Africa.

Meanwhile, First National Bank (FNB) has suffered several technical hiccups involving the likes of double transactions.
