Johannesburg - Micro-blogging social network site Twitter has announced that they will identify, permanently suspend and stop abusive users from creating new accounts.

On Tuesday, Twitter said that they will be stopping the creation of new abusive accounts, bringing forward safer search results, and collapsing potentially abusive or low-quality Tweets.

“We’re taking steps to identify people who have been permanently suspended and stop them from creating new accounts,” the social network said on their blog.

“This focuses more effectively on some of the most prevalent and damaging forms of behaviour, particularly accounts that are created only to abuse and harass others,” they went further to say.

All tweets and replies to tweets that are deemed to be abusive or harmful or of low-quality will be collapsed and only accessible when a user searches specifically for them.

The social network has said that repeat offenders will be suspended and permanently banned from creating new accounts.

Twitter has made searching the social network safer by automatically filtering sensitive content through the function.

An official Twitter Safety account tweeted that sensitive content would now be hidden from search results.

“Making Twitter a safer place is our primary focus. We stand for freedom of expression and people being able to see all sides of any topic,” Twitter further said in their blog.

Twitter’s policies state content such as violent threats, wishes for the physical harm, death, or disease of individuals or groups, references to mass murder, racist and sexist tropes, or other content that degrades someone and other inappropriate content  – will not be tolerated.
