Cape Town - Telecommunications company Telkom [JSE:TKG] has announced a zero rating data plan for subscribers of local video streaming service ShowMax.

On Tuesday, the company announced that customers of the streaming service would be granted free data, as part of its partnership with Naspers [JSE:NPN] owned ShowMax.

“New and existing Telkom Summer Unlimited users will have unlimited data to stream content on ShowMax, and in addition to this Telkom is gifting 30 days’ ShowMax access to all customers that sign up for the SmartHome Premium or Smartplan 100 plan from today until the end of December 2015,” Telkom said in a statement.

ShowMax is positioned as in-house competition for DStv's BoxOffice as providers shift to exploit a growing internet market for content in SA.

The company has 12 000 hours of streaming video on demand (SVOD) content though the cost of data is a challenge to adoption.

“SVOD is a relatively new concept in SA with data usage and concerns over data caps being the main barriers to adoption. In the four months since we launched ShowMax, the clear message is that people love the concept and the content, and now all they need is a solution on the data side of things. This is why these Unlimited Telkom products are so important,” said John Kotsaftis, general manager of ShowMax South Africa.

Subscription to the ShowMax service costs R99 per month and also competes with MTN’s VU (formerly FrontRow) which costs R119 per month.
