Cape Town – Telkom plans migrating more than 11 000 of its ADSL customers to 10Mbps (megabit per second) and 20Mbps fibre lines as part of a two month trial period.

The migration comes as Telkom is building out its fibre-to-the-home offerings amid competition from independent players such as Vumatel and Fibrehoods in areas like Johannesburg.

Telkom's chief executive officer, Sipho Maseko, last year said that his company targets having its fibre network reach one million homes by 2018.

And the company's latest salvo in the fibre market is its ADSL upgrade trial for "more than 11 000 DSL customers across the country".

“This unique trial offer is a win-win for customers in that we will migrate them to our Telkom fibre, at no additional cost,” said Telkom Consumer managing director Attila Vitai in a statement.

Customers will not be charged installation fees for the fibre connectivity. And once the trial concludes, Telkom says its customers will have the option of returning to their original line speed or upgrading to the higher speed network at no extra cost.

“Fibre is the next evolution of fixed line broadband connectivity and we want our customers to enjoy the best technology experience we can offer. Not only does fibre offer faster speeds but it is less susceptible to electronic interference, lightning and water damage than the copper network,” said Vitai.

The trial offer begins on Tuesday, February 2 and Telkom said that its teams are on standby to complete installations within seven to 10 days from order.
