Contrary to claims that Eskom's leadership is anti-coal, the power utility will continue to use the commodity for the next half-century, says outgoing CEO André De Ruyter.
De Ruyter was speaking alongside the Minerals Council of South Africa's outgoing CEO Roger Baxter about South Africa's energy challenges at the Mining Indaba on Tuesday.
"There is a view that Eskom leadership is anti-coal, that we want to move away from coal," De Ruyter said. In reality, Eskom is to remain a "large consumer" of coal for a long period to come, he told delegates. The last unit of Kusile, the youngest power station, which is yet to be fully commissioned, is scheduled to shut down in 2071.
