There is confusion about a proposed plan by the eThekwini municipality to wean itself off Eskom supply by pursuing independent nuclear power.

The proposal has the country’s third largest municipality procuring 2 600MW from independent producers by 2035, with the bulk of that power, 2 290MW, expected to be sourced from coal, nuclear and gas.

Sibusiso Ntshalintshali from eThekwini’s energy office told a webinar last week that the municipality aims to reduce its reliance on Eskom by 20% by 2025 and expand that to 40% by 2030. It wants to be completely energy independent by 2050.
