Industrial gas users accuse Sasol Gas of abusing its dominant position in the market, amid claims that its latest price hikes will put many smaller players out of business and push consumers deeper into financial trouble.

The Industrial Gas Users' Association of Southern Africa (IGUA-SA) and Egoli Gas took Sasol Gas to the Competition Commission last year after the petroleum giant hiked the price of its piped gas from R68 to R133.34 per gigajoule (GJ).

Sasol subsequently delayed the implementation of that price increase, saying it's engaging with the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) about its customers' concerns. At the same time, Sasol pointed out that it had not applied the maximum price allowable by Nersa, which is R273.43/GJ.
