Capitec says it is still working on returning its banking services online after an outage that has lasted more than 24 hours.
The bank's app, online banking and USSD service for customers without smartphones have been offline since Thursday morning. The bank's customers aired their frustration on social media, and Capitec remained the number one trending topic on SA's Twitterverse by Friday morning.
"Capitec Bank is still experiencing an infrastructure problem in the central servers that support our banking channels. We realise this is a terrible experience for our clients and apologise for the inconvenience," said the bank in a short statement.
The bank says it is "absolutely committed" to resolving the problem. Card payments and ATMs remain unaffected by the outage.
Over the past two years, South African banking clients have seen repeated bank outages. Absa and FNB clients have been affected, with Standard Bank suffering such severe outages that it was forced to hold a media briefing to apologise. Its chief engineering officer resigned shortly after that.
