Some of South Africa's biggest companies have made some notable expansions into overseas markets in the past few years, but the performance of those operations is a reminder that home ground advantage does not equal success on foreign shores.

Local companies had been exiting different overseas markets this year and not having a clear understanding of what they were getting into, was at the heart of their problems.
