As SA explores alternative electricity options, Eskom might face uncertain future

In what has over the years become an unsolicited part of South Africans' vocabulary, Eskom this week again implemented Stage 2 load shedding due to problems at three of its power stations, among other challenges.

However, South Africans aren't taking it lying down and have sought alternative options such as inverters, generators and solar panel rooftops to beat load shedding blues. Some South Africans with deep pockets are moving off the grid completely and large corporations are exploring self-generation options. 

Which raises the question - is Eskom slowly moving itself off the map, and what is the long-term impact of this be on the state-owned power utility?
