A major international airline reservation system called Radixx International has suffered what they are terming a "major technical event" which has brought down the booking systems of several airlines across the world, including local airline FlySafair.

The outage started during the early hours of Wednesday morning South African time.

According to a statement by FlySafair, Radixx International has yet to reveal the exact nature of the technical issue. Radixx is part of the Sabre group of companies, which also provides services to several local travel agencies.

"The outage has been incredibly frustrating, inhibiting our ability to sell any new tickets or make any changes to existing reservations" says Kirby Gordon, chief marketing officer at FlySafair.

"Fortunately, the systems that manage airport administration are separate, so there has been no disruption to operations other than that customers are unable to check-in online and must do so at the airport."

Customers are also able to purchase tickets at the airports for flights departing within the next 24 to 48 hours.

"We're selling all flights for a flat fee of R800 including a checked bag. We hope to have our call centre up and running to offer this same service in the next few hours," he added.

"We wholly appreciate, and share, the frustration that this is causing our loyal customers. Of course, we will do right by our customers and not penalise anyone who was unable to make any changes while the systems were down."
