South African Airways (SAA), which has just secured the R10.5 billion it needed from the government to avoid liquidation, is facing a fresh hurdle in the form of a challenge by pilots' union, the SAA Pilots' Association (SAAPA). 

The association is fighting what it believes is an unlawful proposal by the state-owned flag carrier regarding the retrenchment of pilots as part of the airline's restructuring.

The union takes issue with what it claims is a plan to retrench or retain pilots based on race.
