Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, has defended the state's programme to fast-track emergency power as "correct, above-board and transparent" as a committee of Parliament gears up to hold an inquiry into how bidders were chosen.

The minister was giving evidence before Parliament's oversight committee on mineral resources and energy about the state's Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme, an initiative to quickly build 2 000 MW of new power to cut down on load shedding.

While the committee is planning to hold an inquiry into the procurement process behind the programme, its scope has not yet been established. The oversight committee may meet next week to iron out the details and start considering which witnesses to call.
