The outgoing CEO of Gold Fields, Nick Holland, whose 13-year tenure at the helm of the company was dogged by the poor performance of its South Deep mine, says he is satisfied with the work he has done at the firm, which has over the last decade expanded its global footprint.

As the current longest-serving CEO in the South African mining sector, Holland has weathered many storms, including criticism over South Deep's misfortunes, which had seen the mine incur crippling losses despite numerous plans to turn it around.

The mechanised mine, located southwest of Johannesburg, has in the past two years shown signs of recovery and, in 2019, posted positive financial results.
