MTN's CEO Ralph Mupita says the firm's recent interest in Telkom has compelling business reasons behind it, which haven't changed just because the talks between the two companies collapsed. While Africa's mobile operator isn't talking publicly about a potential next move, it still thinks consolidation in the capital-intensive industry is inevitable.
In October, MTN announced that it was pulling out of talks with Telkom, which failed to provide sufficient assurances around exclusivity. MTN announced the talks in July, which had the potential to propel the group to the status of SA's largest mobile operator, though Telkom then got a formal offer from data-only operator Rain.
