Shoppers will soon be able to buy Pick n Pay food, groceries and liquor via Takealot's Mr D app, following a new deal between the companies.

Much like Pick n Pay's current grocery delivery service ASAP!, which has a 30-item cap, customers will only be able to order a limited number of items, which will be delivered within an hour.

The service will be rolled out in August, starting in Cape Town, with the rest of the country added by the end of the 2023 financial year.

"Grocery is an area that the Takealot group has not really got involved in, in any large sense. But with this commercial agreement, we believe we are bringing the best of grocery being Pick n Pay, as well as the best online being ourselves together," said Takealot’s founder Kim Reid. Mr D has 2.5 million customers.

"We have a strong ASAP! on-demand offer and a good scheduled delivery business, but we know we can grow faster and we believe that joining forces and working with businesses who share the same commitment to customers, is the best way to further accelerate our growth,” said Pick n Pay CEO Pieter Boone at group’s strategy presentation.

Shoppers using the new service will also have access to Pick n Pay’s specials. The service will also be linked to the retailer’s Smart Shopper rewards programme.
