The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is investigating whether two Chinese rail groups made illegal payments to Gupta associate Salim Essa after they won contracts to supply around 700 locomotives to Transnet.

The NPA has yet to share much information about the case, which is still under investigation. No charges have been laid.
