Retail giant Massmart may have abandoned its fresh food ambition, but it has welcomed the Competition Tribunal's consent agreement to put an end to exclusive leases at malls and shopping centres for grocery retailers.

On Monday, the Competition Commission said the tribunal had confirmed a consent agreement between the commission and Shoprite Checkers, including its OK Foods and Usave businesses, to bring to an end the retailers' exclusive lease agreements with landlords.

The agreements made it difficult for small, medium and specialist stores to set up shop in the same malls and shopping centres as the big retailers.
