Despite Standard Bank’s insistence that employee misconduct with ghost accounts was contained to one market in the Western Cape, former bank staff contend that the practice was much more widespread.
They also told Fin24 that the number of Standard Bank staff dismissed for activating customers' accounts with their own money and their own cellphones is growing.
The bank won't say how many of the 67 employees it said it was investigating have now been dismissed and how many new individuals it is now probing. In April, Standard Bank dismissed 34 universal bankers for activating customer accounts with their own money.
