In early December 2017, the abrupt resignation of Markus Jooste, the CEO of Stellenbosch-headquartered global furniture and household goods company Steinhoff, took the market by complete surprise.

Within two days, the group's share price had plunged by 80%. Six months later, its shares were down 95%, cutting around R200 billion from the conglomerate's market capitalisation.
