Transnet and French train giant Alstom have reached an "in-principle agreement" to resolve a legal dispute related to the state-owned freight rail operator's scandal-plagued decision to buy 1 064 new locomotives a decade ago.

"A binding definitive agreement will resolve pending legal disputes and enable urgent completion of delivery of electric locomotives to enhance Transnet Freight Rail’s ability to serve customer demand," said Transnet. "The next steps will be to work toward the finalisation of the agreement."

While details of the proposed settlement announced on Monday are scarce, Alstom confirmed it related to the locomotive supply agreement that Transnet signed with Bombardier Transportation South Africa in 2014.
