Telkom's evolution has seen the once fully state-owned company reinvent itself, going from grappling with an "existential crisis" to being a relevant player aligned with megatrends in the telecommunications sector. 

This was the synopsis given by outgoing CEO Sipho Maseko on Monday as he outlined the former fixed-line operator's transformation over the past decade. Ten years ago, Telkom was not only behind in its adoption of new technologies. Its financial position was also dire, and it had little to show for a bloated workforce that contributed to the draining of its finances.
