South Africa's economy is highly concentrated – meaning many industries are dominated by a handful of large firms, according to a new report by the Competition Commission.

The 416-report, the first of its kind, was handed over to Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel on Tuesday afternoon.

The report investigated concentration levels over the past five to eight years across 178 industries, looking at everything from grain storage firms to clothing retailers, pharmacies and fertiliser producers.
