A tsunami of mental health issues is brewing, and not just due to a heightened risk of depression due to lockdown-related isolation.

Insurance group Liberty said it was surprised by the decline in claims related to mental illnesses and suicide in 2020. Claims related to mental and behavioural disorders declined from 6.6% in 2019 to 5.1% in 2020, but those associated with Alzheimer's and progressive dementia had a slight uptick.

Suicide claims surprised on the upside too, declining from 4.1% to 2.6%.
